The Charter Schools Program (CSP) expands education choice by funding new public charter schools, replicating high-quality models, and disseminating effective practices. Since the program’s inception in 1995, more than $6.27 billion in grant awards have supported more than 9,000 schools across the country and its territories.

Between 1991 and 1999, 35 states and the District of Columbia passed charter school legislation. These states include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Minnesota was the first state in the nation to welcome charter schools, passing their landmark legislation in 1991.
